    Joseph Perello is the co-founder of Perello & Company. He manages the marketing, communications and business development for clients and helps them achieve their growth goals.

    An entrepreneur with a diverse background, Joe has worked in media, marketing, sports and public service. He has lead marketing and communications efforts for some of the world's most prestigious brands including the City of New York, the New York Yankees, Bank of America and Mars' Health and Nutrition unit.

    Joe is most recently known for his role as the first Chief Marketing Officer for New York City under Mayor Bloomberg, where he created NYC Marketing, the City's first central agency for media, licensing, sponsorship and marketing. Joe's public/private partnership group generated over $100,000,000 for city initiatives in marketing, media, sponsorship, tourism and economic development.

    A writer and a speaker, Joe has contributed to several trade publications including Brandweek and the Sports Business Journal. He is a frequent guest speaker at Harvard Business School, Stanford University, New York University as well as marketing conferences around the world.

  • Wendy Perello

    Wendy Perello, a seasoned marketing and advertising professional, is the co-founder of Perello & Company, a New York-based strategic marketing firm. Throughout her career, Wendy has developed and implemented successful marketing campaigns for leading financial and consumer brands including: American Express, Citigroup, Bank of America (formerly MBNA America), MillionTreesNYC, 1-800-FLOWERS.com, DraftFCB, and the Claremont Children's School.

    In her role at Perello & Company, Wendy works closely with clients that include brands, cities and non-profit organizations to increase their brand awareness, deliver on their corporate social responsibility missions and reposition and rebuild their brands. She also helps clients reorganize their internal marketing and advertising structures and determine their best marketing practices.

    Wendy, who received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from the University of Delaware is also involved in a variety of non-profit volunteer work with organizations such as Harlem4Kids.org and the Harlem Children's Zone. She currently resides with her husband (Joseph) and their two children in Harlem.

    Melissa Penn is a seasoned public relations professional with almost a decade of experience managing media relations and event logistics for powerhouse consumer and healthcare brands including: Mattel, The Jim Henson Company, Krispy Kreme, IHOP, Daily Candy, OLAY Vitamins, Novartis Pharmaceuticals and Nature Made Vitamins.

    Throughout her career, Melissa has successfully garnered media placements and publicity for her clients including: The Boston Globe, Good Housekeeping, Shape, Marie Claire, OK! Magazine, Parenting, Self, Fitness and major network affiliates.

    She received a Bachelor of Arts in Public Relations from The University of Southern California and minored in French and Theatre. She has also studied at The Sorbonne University in Paris, France and The French Institute Alliance Francaise in New York.

    While she is still a California girl at heart, Melissa enjoys the New York city life and enjoys reading French literature in Central Park, watching independent films, exercising at the gym and eating healthful foods with friends.

    Company co-founder Joe Perello stepped away from Perello & Company during 2003-2006 to serve the City of New York as its first Chief Marketing Officer. Appointed by Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, he created NYC Marketing, the City’s first central agency for media, licensing, sponsorship and marketing.

    In three short years, the organization generated over $100,000,000 for city initiatives through a public-private marketing model developed by Joe and his team. Harvard Business School called the initiative, “imaginative and bold” making “an impressive impact on the City.” Mayor Bloomberg said, “Perello provided ingenuity and innovation and delivered unprecedented results.”

    Joe’s experience, success and satisfaction from merging business goals with the public sector inspired him to re-develop and re-launch Perello & Company with its public/private mission.

    Perello & Company developed and helped launch the MillionTreesNYC "Traveling Greenhouse" campaign, which was sponsored by a major global bank and aimed to educate New Yorkers about Mayor Bloomberg's initiative to plant one million trees by 2017 and to provide a venue where New Yorkers could donate or purchase a tree.

    Perello & Company and its partners designed and constructed the Greenhouse, which contained exhibits about the MillionTreesNYC initiative to help educate New Yorkers on how to make a "green" change for the better of the environment. The Greenhouse was also equipped with touch screens computers to enable online donations.

    The team also developed innovative integrated marketing campaign that included a video in Times Square about the MillionTreesNYC. The initiative raised critical funds, awareness and provided a means for MillionTreesNYC to collect donations from New Yorkers in a safe, secure and fun environment. In addition, the initiative helped raise awareness of the bank among key clients, engaged employees and made a powerful impact in NYC, an important market for the global bank.

    In his role as the first Chief Marketing Officer for New York City, Joe Perello and the NYC marketing team managed focused on generating revenue and achieving global awareness for New York City by leveraging its brand image and cultural assets.

    To achieve these objectives, NYC Marketing developed 14 corporate partnerships - one of the most successful was an innovative multi-year and multi-platform partnership with The History Channel.

    This strategic partnership, which included innovative advertising, marketing and promotional aspects, allowed the city to bring to life the history of its heritage tourism, education and restoration throughout the five boroughs.

    The partnership consisted of marketing, advertising and promotional elements that celebrated and emphasized the historical value of New York City and also encouraged the next generation of New Yorkers to cultivate and protect NYC’s history.

    • Benefited over 1,300 New York City Public School libraries through The History Channel’s donation of a history themed DVD to each school
    • Supported the Citywide restoration program that actively preserves and maintains 250 Parks monuments and 3 Historic House Trust sites
    • Provided NYC an opportunity to promote itself domestically and internationally to The History Channel’s 129 million subscriber households
    • Included an exclusive “NYC Week,” an annual primetime programming special on The History Channel that featured New York City content

    PERELLO Teaches HBS Case Study on NYC Marketing Office He Helped Develop for Fourth Year in Row

    March 17, 2009 - Joseph Perello, the first chief marketing officer of the City of New York, and co-founder of Perello & Company, a strategic and civic-minded marketing agency, guest lectured at Harvard Business School in March, alongside Professor Anita Elberse. Perello assists in teaching the HBS Case Study, Marketing New York, written by Professor Kash Rangan and Professor Anita Elberse. The case is based on the first marketing agency created by Mr. Perello for the City of New York. This will be Perello's fifth time presenting the case study to a HBS class. He also assists in teaching the case study at Stanford University and New York University.

    Speech Focuses on the Pivotal Role of Private Enterprise in Successfully Marketing Cities

    June 1, 2008 - Joseph Perello, the first chief marketing officer of the City of New York and co-founder of Perello & Company, a strategic and civic-minded marketing agency, delivered the keynote address to more than 1,000 attendees at the first annual City Marketing Congress in Den Haag, Netherlands on May 26, 2007.

    Perello tapped into his first-hand professional experience developing New York City’s first-ever centralized city marketing office to explain how cities can generate revenue and achieve global awareness by leveraging their brand image and cultural assets. He also discussed the vital role of the private enterprise in marketing cities.

    Perello was invited to deliver the keynote address by Fritz Huffnagel, deputy mayor and manager of Den Haag’s City Marketing initiative. Like Perello, Huffnagel is also a city marketing innovator who was a driver and champion for the City of Amsterdam’s current city marketing initiative, I amsterdam.
